Farm Boy Food Service traces its roots back to 1952, when it was founded as Mahon-Bonenberger Packing Company, a complete meat-packing business. Operations included cattle and hog slaughtering, with the meats produced being packaged and sold to retail stores under the “Farm Boy” label.

In 1965, company co-founder John Bonenberger became the sole owner of the business. One year later, he passed away after a sudden illness and his 22-year-old son Robert assumed management of the company along with his 17-year-old brother Richard. The business struggled forward, changing its name to “Farm Boy” which had broad recognition because of the meats sold under that label in area retail stores.

In 1975, Farm Boy ended its slaughtering operations, but continued – as it does today – to process and cure meat products. These challenging years helped form the foundation for the growth and success that defines Farm Boy Food Service today.

In 1982, Farm Boy became the Code label distributor in Southern Indiana. With this relationship, Farm Boy quickly grew as it began product distribution, with a strong emphasis on the pizza industry. The relationship with Code remained strong, and growth continued. Code eventually became UniPro, the food distributor buying group that Farm Boy remains part of today. In 2000, Farm Boy President Robert Bonenberger was appointed to the Board of Directors of UniPro, the largest food co-op in the United States.         Farm Boy continues to grow and diversify. More than 5,000 products are available, including Farm Boy's own hams, wieners and steaks. A new Food Mart recently opened next to the main Farm Boy facility that offers wholesale pricing to the public.

As Farm Boy enters its second half-century of business, it is still a locally owned and managed company. Brothers Robert and Richard Bonenberger are continuing to grow the business based on dedication, excellent customer service and hard work.
